The latest winner of a big Powerball prize to be made public, was Shatarra Johnson, a 30-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, who matched five numbers to claim $1 million.
According to the Powerball website, she purchased her winning ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 21701 Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores.
“I was out shopping with my mom, and she kept suggesting I buy a ticket,” says Johnson in a press release. “We were passing a 7-Eleven, and even though I was feeling pretty tired, I pulled in and bought a ticket.”
Commenting on her win Johnson said she didn’t think anything of it until the night of the drawing: “I laid down in my bed for the night and I remembered I had a ticket for the Powerball drawing that night. I got out of bed and checked my ticket and with each number I read, I got more excited. When I realized I won $1 million, I was shocked!”
According to the Powerball website, Johnson is planning to pay off her student loans, take a vacation with her mom, and then save the remainder.
The last time the jackpot went it was won by a single ticket in California, which matched all six numbers and won the $150 million Powerball jackpot in the Saturday, November 2 drawing, according to the website. It was the seventh time the Powerball jackpot had been hit in 2019.
The Powerball jackpot currently stands at $277 million or a cash value of $188.4 million.
How do you play Powerball?
Powerball draws, which are broadcast live from the lottery studio in Tallahassee, Florida, take place on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m. EDT, meaning there are just three days to go until the next one.
Powerball is one of the most widely played lottery games in the country, with tickets sold in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to its website.
Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. In the game, players select five numbers from 1 to 69, in addition to one Powerball number from 1 to 26. Furthermore, players can multiply any non-jackpot prizes using the Power Play option for an additional $1 per go in certain circumstances.
According to Powerball, the odds of winning a prize are the same in every Powerball drawing. The website states that a player has a 1 in 24.9 chance of winning a prize when the jackpot is $40 million, and it doesn’t change if the jackpot is $1 billion.
It is also not based on the number of tickets sold; even if there are more tickets sold in a particular drawing, odds of winning a prize remain the same.
When it comes to PowerPlay, the website states that for an additional $1 per play, non-jackpot prizes can be multiplied 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X. The multiplier number is randomly chosen before each number draw. The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot annuity is $150 million or less.
The next drawing will be on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 10:59 p.m. EDT.
